The Credit Report Sample was created in 1998 by TransUnion. It is a great tool for consumers who want to obtain a free TransUnion credit report.
You have probably received a copy of your consumer report at one time or another. They come in the mail with your statements. You just need to know what information you need to get it.
When you receive your consumer report, there is a table of contents on the front of the report. Look over the page and read the information under each heading that describes what is contained within the report. Look over the entire page and decide if the information is useful and accurate.
A good idea is to search for yourself. Ask yourself if you have ever had a debt or closed account that you can find no reference on the page. If the answer is yes, you may be missing something.
After a couple of hours, you should have a rough idea of what you should be looking for on your consumer report. Ask a creditor for his or her records. Call a lawyer and find out who has a good history of paying back debts and paying on time.
Be sure to look for any negative items. If the creditor reported a collection account as paid in full, try to verify that it is actually done. If a debt looks right but is not stated as such, look for the reasons behind the discrepancy.
Now, compare the total bill with what is stated on the credit report. If there is an error, be sure to let the creditor know. A good way to do this is to have a debt representative call the creditor.
You should then have a written record of the conversation. In this way, you will have proof of a conversation and can contact the representative in writing. If you really want to go down this route, take your time and try to find a legitimate agency.
